About Faxitron X-Ray Digital Imaging | Faxitron Bioptics LLC

Faxitron is the Specialist in Specimen Radiography

Building the First Cabinet X-Ray System. The original Faxitron cabinet x-ray system was invented in the late ’60s by physics pioneer Joseph Edmonds Henderson who would go on to head the illustrious Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington. Henderson also invented the betatron and synchrotron, which may explain the ‘tron’ in our product’s name.

The HP Years. The untimely death of one of his partners compelled Edmonds to sell his business, Field Emission Corporation, to Hewlett-Packard in 1974. HP recognized the great potential in the Faxitron product line and adopted the process for use in manufacturing miniaturized silicon chips.

Faxitron X-Ray Corporation Emerges. On December 20, 1993, Faxitron X-Ray was incorporated by a group of private investors who purchased the Faxitron cabinet x-ray  systems product line from Hewlett-Packard. A short time later, the new company acquired the Torrex™ x-ray system product line from EG&G Astrophysics Research Corporation, which enabled them to further penetrate the NDT market.

Continuing to Build Out the Product Line. Product improvement programs began soon after the company’s inception. New cabinet designs were introduced along with the 50 micron focal spot x-ray sources. Our Model MX-20 was introduced in 1997 as a dedicated high-resolution specimen radiography system for medical breast biopsies and small animal imaging. In 1998, the company acquired the assets of Micro Focus Imaging, Inc. and the Micro 50™ specimen radiography cabinet system.

Bioptics Logo Conversion from Film to Digital. In the new millennium, Faxitron continued to drive innovation in the industry by introducing the first digital specimen radiography system - the MX-20 Digital. The digital detector for the system was supplied by Bioptics. Bioptics supplied cameras for Faxitron until deciding to vertically integrate and begin producing their own digital specimen radiography systems.

Faxitron Bioptics LogoA Renewed Partnership. Bioptics made rapid innovations in their systems. The two companies continued to operate independently and grow the overall specimen radiography market until merging in July 2011. The new company, Faxitron Bioptics, LLC, retains the spirit of innovation and focus on quality that has defined the Faxitron brand from the beginning.

Faxitron LogoFaxitron the Brand. In July 2012 Faxitron Bioptics, LLC officially launched their new branding, which is in essence a renewal of the long time Faxitron brand reinvigorated with Bioptics' technology and corporate culture. The market knows Faxitron by name and in the breast imaging space, knows the CoreVision and BioVision by name, so the new branding was the natural and logical evolution.
